Minding Your Money During Divorce

"Knowledge is power and in the case of divorce, what you don't know can really hurt you in both lost money and a slower start on your new future."
Even though 50%
of all marriages will end divorce, very few people are prepared for
the havoc it can cause, especially when it comes to their finances.
Worst of all going through a divorce can be so emotionally draining
that you may not realize the consequences of your decisions well after
the papers are signed and then it is generally too late.
(See the sample case below.)
That's why it is just as important to prepare for your financial divorce as it is to prepare for your legal one.
We are specially trained in the financial and tax issues related to divorce. We can assist you and/or your attorney with the process of designing a 'financially fair' settlement. We accomplish this by providing you with detailed information and recommendations so you can make smart money decisions before, during and after your divorce.
Before your divorce:
Pre-divorce counseling
During your divorce:
Developing current and future financial planning strategies
Evaluating financial data and assets
Identifying tax consequences and considerations
Evaluating settlement options
Expert witness testimony
After your divorce:
Post-divorce financial recovery and planning

Spouse A came to us with a settlement proposal from Spouse B and asked for a second opinion before signing the final papers. We analyzed the proposal and this is what we found (see Exhibit A).
While this settlement appeared to be okay because they were both starting out at the same level, the long term effects on their lives was dramatically different. So, we proposed a settlement option that would be 'financially fair' to both spouses. Exhibit B shows our proposal and as a result both spouses have a chance to thrive.
